Robyn Schwarz (she/her)

Principal Consultant & Co-Founder

Robyn E. Schwarz (she/her) is the Principal Consultant and Co-Founder of Dumbo Octopus Consulting, where she brings over a decade of experience in academic research, adult education, and nonprofit leadership. A historian by training with a PhD (ABD) in Canadian History and a Master of Arts in Canadian-American Relations from Western University, Robyn’s work has always intersected the realms of history, social justice, and nonprofit advocacy.

Named a Future of Good 2024 Young Impact Leader, Robyn is celebrated for her innovative approaches to community-centric fund development and her relentless advocacy for nonprofits. Her early career began at YWCA Southern Interior BC as a program developer and lifesaving instructor, and after a decade in academia, she returned to nonprofit work in 2018 at SHORE Centre. Her research into single mothers’ experiences with social services in Ontario from 1958 to 1982 continues to inform her consulting work today.

An accomplished writer and feminist commentator, Robyn frequently shares her insights on reproductive rights, Canadian history, and social justice. Links to all of her public commentary can be found on her Informed Opinions’ page. She is also an alumna of Pride at Work Canada’s Thrive Virtual Leadership Program, where she deepened her commitment to anti-racist approaches, decolonizing the workplace, and fostering authentic leadership. She proudly identifies as bisexual and neurodivergent, having received an ADHD diagnosis at age 33.

At Dumbo Octopus Consulting, Robyn’s passion lies in creating anti-hierarchical, collaborative environments where every voice is valued. A long time practitioner of Shine Theory, she actively resists patriarchal social norms that push competition over collaboration. She draws on her background as an adult educator to support organizations in building their capacity to learn, adapt, and thrive in the face of challenges. No one dislikes capitalism more than Robyn; she dedicates herself to equipping the organizations and causes she cares about with the tools needed to drive systemic change.

Alicia Langill (she/her)

Director of Operations & Co-Founder

Alicia Langill is passionate about delivering accessible, affordable, and highly customizable financial and operational solutions for nonprofit clients. Born and raised in Waterloo Region, Alicia now works full time with Dumbo Octopus Consulting, where she oversees our team's operations and leads our financial literacy and sustainability services.

As a nonprofit bookkeeping specialist, Alicia manages cashflow, payroll, taxes, and financial systems for grassroots and mid-sized organizations. Her client work currently includes bookkeeping for SHORE Centre and Porchlight Counselling and Addiction Services, where she supports both day-to-day financial health and long-term sustainability. Alicia is known for tailoring her services to the unique needs of each nonprofit, ensuring that organizations have the clarity and confidence to make strategic decisions.

Alicia brings more than a decade of experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, strategic communications, and sustainability planning. At SHORE Centre, where she worked for over 13 years, she played a pivotal role in growing the organization’s budget beyond $1 million annually, raising over $1.1 million from donors and foundations, and leading the development of the 2020–2023 strategic plan. Her leadership as Interim Executive Director from 2019 to 2020 was marked by steady navigation through the COVID-19 pandemic and a focus on organizational capacity.

At Dumbo Octopus Consulting, Alicia’s expertise extends beyond bookkeeping. She coaches nonprofit leaders and staff on budgeting best practices, builds systems for sustainable operations, puts together collaborative grant applications, supports fundraisers, and provides accessible financial literacy tools. Her approachable leadership style makes her a trusted partner for both Boards and frontline teams. Alicia is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and get to the bottom of what our clients need.

Outside of her professional life, Alicia is a skilled textile artist whose quilting, crochet, and knitting work has even been featured in the CBC miniseries Alias Grace. She is also a proud mother to her awesome son (who the Dumbo Octopus team loves to embarrass).
